BOOKSHOP REPORT

"Who needs Waterstones?"

The shop continues to attract customers and donations and some recent comments made to the team are 'What a fabulous place!'; `Who needs Waterstones?, 'I just can't keep away from this bookshop!' and 'How long have you been here - I didn't know you were here.' ! We have regular customers who bring books in and leave having bought more, and a couple who live in Spain who buy multiples of three paperbacks to read by the pool.

In conversation with two of our wonderful bookshop team at the beginning of July we decided that the shop must have some sort of healing properties looking at the number of pairs of glasses in the drawer [not all Stan's] and two walking sticks that have been in the shop for ages. Who came into the shop using a stick and walked out without it?

We have sold several Ward Lock Red Guides to the Webmaster of a website for the guides and the beautiful bound set of Essex Countryside magazines from the estate of the Reverend William Smith of Boreham has gone to a good home. Stan's instructions for setting out the daily sales totals helped when the first book was full and Stan needed to work out the total up to the end of June – almost all of the days were set out so that he could easily find the daily totals. Thank you!

P.S. 'Good for a giggle' - In the bookshop were two of our team and a customer – a young man who browsed and then bought one of our old books (from the 'old bookshelf'). As he browsed I took a book to the counter to buy and said I think diet books work if you just buy the book' – our customer, quick as a flash, said 'Well – it's worked –you've lost two pounds already!'
