"The Sound of their Music"
Chelmsford Operatic and Dramatic Society - 30 March 2008.

I had been looking forward to this event for sometime. I felt that "The Sound of their music" would be my "cup of tea" and I was not disappointed.

The evening was not totally focussed on West End shows, although a few were featured. However, the programme began with a beautiful version of "Wind beneath my wings", sung by Gareth Barton. This has been a very popular song over the years, recorded by quite a few artists.

Inevitably, because of their successful production of "Carousel" at the Civic Theatre in February/March, we were treated to songs from this show, the first being "When the children are asleep" sung by Kevin Abrey (Mr Snow), Joined by Christine Booth.

A young man called Matt Bonner sang "Electricity" from the highly acclaimed "Billy Elliot" in the West End. Unfortunately, we were told that Sunday's performance from Matt would be the last for a while as his voice is changing, so we must wait and see what voice he has in the future.

Another West End production included was "Wicked" and the song "Popular", expertly performed by Sarah Porter (no relation). I really enjoyed this as she does have a wonderful flair for comedy.

Returning to "Carousel", Stuart Woolner, who played the role Billy Bigelow, gave a powerful rendition of the Soliloquy. I was really impressed with his voice.

Towards the end of the evening, Peter Smith, a member of CAODS for 60 years, and Becca Bishop, a recently joined member, sang "You raise me up" and were joined by the entire company.

The evening's entertainment finished with the Company singing "You'll never walk alone", another classic from "Carousel". Patrick Tucker, the Musical Director, told us that younger members of the Company thought that this was a football song!

The excellent accompanist for the evening was Peter Snell.

We then adjourned to the Blue Room for a finger buffet and usual raffle which was well supported, making over £117.
